The Tibet Overland Tour via Kathmandu is a classic overland journey connecting the two ancient trade capitals of Lhasa and Kathmandu. This remarkable route takes you across the vast Tibetan Plateau and through spectacular mountain landscapes, including views of the world’s highest peak, Mount Everest.

Along the way, you will visit beautiful Tibetan cities and towns such as Gyantse, Shigatse, Sakya, and Kerung. The journey allows you to explore the mystical Yamdrok Tso Lake and cross several high mountain passes, including Khamba La, Karo La, Gyatso La, and Lalung La, as well as witness the stunning Nazin Kang Sang Glacier.

Day 1: Arrival in Kathmandu

Upon arrival at Tribhuvan International Airport, Kathmandu, you will be warmly welcomed by our representative and transferred to your hotel. After a short rest, your Tibet Tour Adventure begins with sightseeing in Kathmandu.

You will visit UNESCO World Heritage Sites, starting with Swayambhunath Temple (also known as the Monkey Temple), a 2,500-year-old Buddhist stupa perched atop a hill. From here, enjoy breathtaking panoramic views of Kathmandu Valley, especially beautiful during sunset. Swayambhunath is considered one of the oldest and most sacred stupas in Nepal.

Next, you will visit the historic Kathmandu Durbar Square (Hanuman Dhoka), the former royal palace complex of the Malla and Shah kings, renowned for its exquisite temples, courtyards, and traditional Newari architecture.

Today is a free and easy day to prepare for your upcoming journey to Tibet. You may take time to purchase any necessary travel or trekking equipment and complete last-minute preparations.

This day also allows for light acclimatization in Kathmandu before heading to higher altitudes. You can explore the lively Thamel area, known for its shops, cafés, and local markets, or simply relax at your hotel.

We begin our Tibet Overland Tour with an early morning drive from Kathmandu to Kodari, the Nepal–Tibet border post. Upon arrival, we complete immigration and customs formalities before driving uphill to Zhangmu (2,300 m), a vibrant Tibetan border town.

After completing border procedures, we continue our journey through a scenic mountain gorge toward Nyalam, crossing the Himalayan range. Along the way, enjoy spectacular views of deep valleys, dramatic landscapes, and cascading waterfalls.

Upon arrival at the Tibetan check post, you will be met by your Tibetan guide, who will accompany the group for the remainder of the journey in Tibet.

After breakfast, we begin a scenic drive toward Xegar, continuing onward to Lhatse. The journey takes approximately 7 hours and crosses two spectacular high mountain passes: Nyalam Pass (3,800 m / 12,464 ft) and Lalung La Pass (5,082 m / 16,670 ft).

This day offers breathtaking panoramic views of the Himalayan range, including Mount Everest (8,848 m / 29,021 ft), Jugal Himal, and Mount Makalu (8,464 m), along with vast Tibetan landscapes and snow-capped peaks.

Overnight stay: Guesthouse in Lhatse.

Meals: Breakfast

After breakfast, we drive toward Shigatse, Tibet’s second-largest city, a journey of approximately 6 hours. Upon arrival, we visit the renowned Tashilhunpo Monastery, the traditional seat of the Panchen Lama until his death in 1989. The monastery is famous for its massive Thangka wall, clearly visible from the northern side of the road, as well as its impressive statues and sacred halls.

After breakfast, we begin a scenic drive to Lhasa, covering approximately 259 km in about 8 hours. En route, we cross two spectacular high mountain passes—Karo La Pass (5,010 m / 16,432 ft) and Khamba La Pass (4,794 m / 15,724 ft)—both offering breathtaking views of snow-capped peaks and glaciers.

We also visit the stunning turquoise Yamdrok Tso Lake, one of Tibet’s most sacred lakes. Continuing onward, we cross the mighty Yarlung Tsangpo (Brahmaputra) River before catching our first distant views of the iconic Potala Palace as we approach Lhasa.

Over the next two days, you will be fully engaged in sightseeing and cultural excursions in Lhasa, the spiritual heart of Tibet. Highlights include a visit to the magnificent Potala Palace, a UNESCO World Heritage Site that serves as both a grand museum and former winter residence of the Dalai Lamas, renowned for its impressive architecture and priceless treasures.

You will also visit the sacred Jokhang Temple, the holiest shrine in Tibetan Buddhism, which houses revered images of the Buddha brought as dowries by King Songtsen Gampo’s Nepali and Chinese queens. From here, explore the vibrant Barkhor Market, where pilgrims and traders circle the temple along its bustling streets.

Additional visits in Lhasa include Norbulingka, the former summer palace of the Dalai Lamas, as well as the great monastic universities of Drepung Monastery and Sera Monastery, where you can observe traditional monk debates.

Today continues your exploration of Lhasa’s rich cultural and spiritual heritage. You will visit the magnificent Potala Palace, the former winter residence of the Dalai Lamas, renowned for its grand architecture, sacred chapels, and invaluable historical treasures.

The sightseeing also includes a visit to the revered Jokhang Temple, the spiritual heart of Tibetan Buddhism, followed by time to stroll through the lively Barkhor Market, where pilgrims perform their devotional circuit amid traditional shops and local life.

Later, you will explore Norbulingka, the former summer palace of the Dalai Lamas, set within beautifully landscaped gardens. The day concludes with visits to Drepung Monastery and Sera Monastery, famous for their monastic universities and traditional monk debate sessions.

Meals: Breakfast

After breakfast, you will be transferred to Lhasa Gonggar Airport for your flight back to Kathmandu. Upon arrival in Kathmandu, you will be welcomed and transferred to your hotel. The rest of the day is at leisure, allowing you to relax or explore the city at your own pace.

After breakfast, you will be transferred to Tribhuvan International Airport, Kathmandu for your onward flight home. This concludes your unforgettable Tibet Overland Tour via Kathmandu.

By booking with Brothers International Tours & Trading Pte Ltd (the Company), you agree to these Terms and Conditions. This agreement governs your relationship with us and covers liability limitations and cancellation policies.

Privacy Policy

We respect your privacy and ensure that your personal data is kept confidential and used only for booking purposes. We will not disclose or sell your information to third parties.

Trip Booking

A contract is formed when you receive a written confirmation after paying the deposit. Check your booking details carefully and notify us of any errors. The name on your booking must match your passport exactly.

Deposit Requirements

A 50% deposit is required at the time of booking, with the remaining balance due 60 days before departure. Payment can be made via bank transfer or PayNow.

Cancellation Policy

Over 180 days before departure: No charge

180-90 days: 10% charge

90-30 days: 30% charge

30-15 days: 50% charge

15-7 days: 80% charge

Less than 7 days: No refund

No refunds for unused services or voluntary trip cancellations. We recommend purchasing trip cancellation insurance.

Health and Fitness

You must assess your health and fitness before booking. Inform us of any pre-existing medical conditions. We are not responsible for any issues arising from medical conditions or inability to complete the trip.

Travel Insurance

Adequate travel insurance covering accidents, medical expenses, and emergency evacuation is mandatory. We recommend comprehensive coverage for all aspects of the trip.

Itinerary Changes

The itinerary may change due to unforeseen factors such as weather, medical issues, or flight delays. Brothers Team reserves the right to modify the schedule.

Visa and Passport

Ensure your passport is valid for at least 6 months beyond your travel dates. It’s your responsibility to obtain the necessary visas. Brothers Team is not responsible for visa issues.

Injuries and Evacuation

We are not liable for injuries or health conditions during the trip. We strongly recommend purchasing insurance that includes medical and evacuation coverage.

No refunds or discounts for missed services, including illness, injury, or early departure.
