Mt. Kailash Kora – A Sacred Pilgrimage

The kora (circumambulation, circuit, or parikrama) around Mount Kailash is regarded as one of Asia’s most sacred pilgrimages. Devotees from Hindu, Buddhist, Jain, and Bon traditions believe that completing a single kora around the mountain purifies the sins of one’s lifetime, while performing 108 koras can break the cycle of rebirth and ensure nirvana at death.

Adjacent to the mountain, Lake Manasarovar is considered spiritually cleansing. Bathing in or rinsing oneself with its waters is believed to remove worldly burdens and inner impurities, bringing peace and rejuvenation.

The full kora circuit spans approximately 52 km, typically completed over three days. Altitudes range from 4,675 m at Darchen, the starting point, to 5,630 m at Drolma-la, the highest point on the route. Traditions differ in direction: Hindus and Buddhists perform the kora clockwise, while Jain and Bon practitioners go counterclockwise.

This pilgrimage combines challenging high-altitude trekking, breathtaking landscapes, and deep spiritual significance, making it a transformative journey for travelers and devotees alike.
