Day 01: Arrival in Paro (2,280m)

Meals: Lunch / Dinner

Your journey begins with a breathtaking flight into Paro, offering a dramatic introduction to Bhutan’s spectacular landscapes. On a clear day, you’ll be treated to majestic views of some of the world’s highest peaks, gradually giving way to the lush green Paro Valley as you land.

Upon arrival, our representative will greet you and transfer you to your hotel. After lunch, embark on an excursion to the ruins of Drukgyal Dzong, located 16 km up the valley. Built in 1647 by the great Shabdrung Ngawang Namgyal, the father and unifier of medieval Bhutan, the dzong was destroyed by accidental fire and now stands as a poignant reminder of the historic victories it was built to commemorate.

Thangthong Gyalpo (1385–1464) was a remarkable saint from Tibet who traveled to Bhutan in 1433 in search of iron ore. Renowned for his engineering feats, he constructed 108 iron chain bridges across Tibet and Bhutan, of which eight still stand in Bhutan, serving as a lasting testament to his ingenuity and devotion.

En route, visit the imposing Trongsa Dzong, one of the most architecturally and historically significant dzongs in Bhutan, built in its present form in 1644 by Chogyal Minjur Tempa, the official sent by Shabdrung Ngawang Namgyal to unify eastern Bhutan. The dzong was later enlarged at the end of the 17th century by Desi Tenzin Rabgay.

Trongsa Dzong is also the ancestral home of Bhutan’s Royal Family, and the first two hereditary kings ruled Bhutan from this fortress, making it a landmark of both spiritual and political importance.

Continue your journey to Bumthang, the spiritual heart of Bhutan, known for its ancient temples, monasteries, and scenic valleys.

After breakfast, enjoy a full day of sightseeing in the spiritual heart of Bhutan – Bumthang Valley.

Begin with a visit to Jakar Dzong, which literally means “The Castle of the White Bird”. The current structure was built in 1667 and is a striking example of Bhutanese fortress architecture, dominating the valley with its grandeur.

Next, explore Jambay Lhakhang, one of Bhutan’s oldest temples, originally built in 659 AD by King Songtsen Gampo of Tibet—on the same day as the construction of Kichu Lhakhang in Paro. This sacred site was visited by Guru Rinpoche, who restored the spiritual energy of the temple, and later renovated by Sindhu Raja.

The day provides an immersive experience of Bhutan’s spiritual and cultural heritage, offering insight into the ancient traditions, architecture, and religious history that have shaped the kingdom.

If time and energy permit after the long drive, visit the National Memorial Chorten, built in 1974 in honor of His Majesty King Jigme Dorji Wangchuk, the third King of Bhutan, who is widely revered as the “Father of Modern Bhutan.” The chorten is a prominent landmark in Thimphu, offering insight into Bhutanese religious traditions and a place for locals to engage in daily spiritual practices.
