Day 1: Arrival in Paro (2,280m)

Your flight into Paro offers a spectacular introduction to Bhutan. On clear days, enjoy breathtaking views of some of the world’s highest Himalayan peaks before descending into the lush green Paro Valley. Upon arrival, you will be warmly welcomed by our tour representative and transferred to your hotel.

After lunch, drive 16 km up the valley to visit the historic ruins of Drukgyal Dzong. Built in 1647 by the great Shabdrung Ngawang Namgyal—the unifier and founder of medieval Bhutan—the dzong was later destroyed by an accidental fire and now stands as an evocative reminder of Bhutan’s past victories. Explore the impressive ramparts and, weather permitting, enjoy unforgettable views of Mount Jomolhari (7,314 m).

On the return journey, visit Kyichu Lhakhang, one of Bhutan’s oldest and most sacred temples, built in 659 A.D. by the Tibetan King Songtsen Gampo.

Today is a highlight of your Bhutan journey with an excursion to the iconic Taktsang Monastery, also known as Tiger’s Nest. After an early breakfast, enjoy a short drive to Satsam Chorten, the starting point of the trek. The trail ascends gradually through beautiful pine forests, many trees draped in Spanish moss, with colourful prayer flags fluttering along the way.

We stop at the Taktsang Cafeteria for rest and light refreshments before continuing a short walk to a viewpoint where the monastery comes into clear view—seemingly within arm’s reach. Dramatically perched on the edge of a sheer cliff plunging 900 metres into the valley below, Taktsang is one of Bhutan’s most revered landmarks.

After breakfast, we begin the first day of our trek, ascending above the National Museum and gradually climbing through forested trails toward the campsite. As the trail gains altitude, enjoy panoramic views of the Paro Valley, and on clear days, spectacular vistas of snow-capped Himalayan peaks.

Our campsite is located near the historic Jele Dzong. If the caretaker is present, you will have the opportunity to visit this ancient fortress and explore its surroundings.

After lunch, we drive into Thimphu and visit the Traditional Medicine Institute, where medicines are prepared using ancient Bhutanese healing practices. Continue sightseeing at the Takin Preserve Centre, home to Bhutan’s national animal, followed by a stop at Sangay Gang View Point for sweeping views of the city. We also visit the giant Buddha Dordenma Statue, the largest seated Buddha statue in Bhutan.

Transfer to your hotel in Thimphu for dinner and an overnight stay.

Today is dedicated to exploring the cultural and historical highlights of Bhutan’s capital city. Begin with a visit to the National Memorial Chorten, built in honour of the late King Jigme Dorji Wangchuck, followed by Dupthop Lhakhang, one of the few surviving nunneries in Bhutan.

Continue to the National Library, home to a remarkable collection of ancient Buddhist manuscripts, and the Painting School, where traditional Bhutanese art is preserved through the teaching of Thangka painting—sacred Buddhist religious scrolls.

After lunch, visit the Handicrafts Emporium, showcasing authentic Bhutanese handicrafts, and enjoy time shopping for souvenirs in the local markets of Thimphu. In the evening, visit Tashichho Dzong, the impressive seat of Bhutan’s national government and the Central Monastic Body, and the summer residence of the Je Khenpo (Chief Abbot of Bhutan).

Return to your hotel for dinner and an overnight stay in Thimphu.

After breakfast, drive to Punakha via the scenic Dochula Pass. On clear days, enjoy panoramic views of the higher Himalayan peaks and take a short stop for photographs. Continue to Punakha for lunch.

In the afternoon, visit the magnificent Punakha Dzong, built in 1637 by Shabdrung Ngawang Namgyal. Strategically located at the confluence of the Pho Chu (Male) and Mo Chu (Female) rivers, it served as the seat of Bhutan’s government until the reign of the second king.

Legend has it that the construction of the dzong was foretold by Guru Rinpoche, who predicted, “…a person named Namgyal will arrive at a hill that looks like an elephant.” A smaller structure, Dzong Chu (Small Dzong), originally housed a Buddha statue. According to tradition, Shabdrung instructed the architect Zowe Palep to sleep in front of the statue. During his sleep, Shabdrung took him in a dream to Zangtopelri, showing him the palace of Guru Rinpoche, guiding the design of the dzong.

Return to Thimphu in the evening for dinner and overnight at the hotel.

Early in the morning, transfer to Paro Airport for your onward flight home, concluding your unforgettable journey through the Land of Happiness.
